Presentation

The aim of this project is to compare different ways of teaching English as a foreign language in adult education in all the partner countries and to try to improve the teaching methodology in each of the institutions participating in the project. On a first step we will compare methodology, materials and techniques of teaching and every partner will make a research in his own institution and country providing important information about the way English as an international language is taught to adults. Then we will decide criteria which successful materials should meet in order to be used in any English classroom (levels A1-A2) across Europe. On the second step we will createand select a collection of materials to be used with adults, structured on the four skills and which will represent the final product. These materials will focus on English as an international language and will be used by teachers long after the end of the project. Moreover, students from every partner country will meet the others and have activities together. During the international meetingsthere will be lessons held by foreign teachers and students from all countries will develop their English skills and motivation in learning it as a means of international communication.

The four partner institutions are:

* Centre de Formació d'Adults Josepa Massanès i Dalmau
“Centre de Formació d' Adults Josepa Massanès” is a state adult school in Tarragona. Our students are mostly from the city or the suburban regions and towns nearby. It has 11 teachers and about 500 students from 16 to 80 years old, a vast majority of them being in their early thirties. The school offers mainly second chance education (students return to school to get the Secondary School diploma or study to pass an exam to get into a vocational school). There are other courses offered to community: Spanish, Catalan, English, ICT, Art and History and all of them are on basic level and aim to rise students’ interest in learning. Those who want to go further with their education move to vocational or language schools. English has traditionally been regarded as something far way from everyday needs and most students are not used to move outside their community, despite the important tourist area nearby.
Our school hopes that this project will broaden students’ horizons and the experience will prepare them for European reality. They will realise English is not a language spoken only by English, but a useful international tool that enables communication between European citizens. We hope that our students will develop more open-minded and tolerant approaches to other cultures and this will facilitate their access to European labour market by eliminating linguistic barriers.

 Istituto Tecnico Economico "M.Buonarroti"
“Michelangelo Buonarroti” Institute is a State Technical Secondary School with courses in Business Studies and High Technologies for Businesses. The school is in the historical centre of Arezzo, a nice and lively town not far from Florence, in Tuscany. The seat of the school is an old Benedictine monastery dating back to the XIII century with a wonderful cloister. The students who attend the school are aged 14 to 19 and, after five years and a state exam, they get a Diploma in Accountancy. The school has existed in Arezzo since 1874 and, since 1966 it is also the seat of adult education in town. In the early afternoon there are courses in Italian language for immigrants with final exams and certifications, computer studies and English classes. There are two courses for adults: Social Studies and Accountancy. Both courses are structured in four years and at the end there is a final State exam so that the students can get their Diploma. The courses are attended by students aged between 16 up to 65.
Our school is interested in taking part in this international project and in cooperating with other European institutions because the number of students’ mobility will increase, teachers and students will enrich their experience and develop their linguistic and communication skills. Moreover, students will get to know the European reality, will become more tolerant and open-minded with the immigrants who establish in their region (adopting an outward looking and developing a full understanding of this phenomenon), they will be offered opportunities to interact and work together with their counterparts in partner countries preparing themselves for the European labor market and for an active citizenship.

Liceul Tehnologic de Servicii "Sfantul Apostol Andrei"
Liceul Tehnologic de Servicii “Sfantul Apostol Andrei” is a public vocational school situated in Ploiesti and its catchment area is largely rural. It has about 63 teachers and 1200 students (20 with special needs) ranging from the age of 6 to 45 because it includes primary, secondary, vocational high school (public food services, tourism, body aesthetics and hygiene, stylist), adult education in evening classes (for 70 adults who decide to return to school to graduate and get a diploma) and post-secondary medical school (370 students whose specialism is general nurse, lab technician and pharmacist assistant). Our school has labs for every specialism.
Our school wishes to be partner in this project, to take part in every activity and to perform every duty in order to extend the number of students’ mobility in European countries and to bring foreign students and teachers here. We want to exchange good practice with European partners, to improve students’ English skills developing new methods, to enrich our English curricula after analyzing other educational systems, to start cooperation with foreign adult education institutions, to help teachers develop professionally, to disseminate project’s outcomes to our institution members. This will broaden students’ horizons and show them that if they work hard becoming competitive and ambitious, they will have the chance to work and travel in foreign countries and enhance their key competences. They will develop more open-minded and tolerant approaches to other cultures and we hope to facilitate students’ access to European labor market by eliminating linguistic barriers and by giving them the chance to improve their English skills and experience with European realities.
